Going For A Swim

Swimming is a great and fun way to get fit and stay in shape.  Here are some helpful tips to get the most out of your dip in the pool.

  • Stay Balanced

    • Your spine should be held as neutrally as possible with your neck and shoulders relaxed.  Think of your spine as a metal rod that everything hangs from.  Keep your knees straight and your ankles flexible because your lower abs and oblique muscles hold up your lower half.  The water will support you and you can use your energy to move forward.

  • Stay a Head

    • Keeping your head in a neutral position will enable you to keep your hips and legs stay balanced near the surface of the water.  Your head weighs around 20 pounds and acts as a counterweight to your legs.  Anytime you lift your head out of the water it automatically makes your legs sink.
