Running Around Again

Some more helpful tips to start your running lifestyle.

  • Running and Walking

    • It is a good idea to start slow by using the run-walk technique.  Beginning runners usually don't have the stamina to run for long periods of time so by running for a short distance and then following it with a walk break, you can begin to build endurance to run longer and harder.

  • Just Breathe

    • Breathing properly is essential to getting a safe and effective run.  Breathing in through your nose and out through your mouth will give your muscles enough oxygen while running to prevent injuries such as side stiches.

  • Walking and Talking

    • Being to run while talking is a good starting pace.  You should be able to comfortably breathe and carry on a conversation with your running partner.  Being able to do this means you are at the pace you need to be.  Also by starting out this way will aide in preventing over training and injuries.

Winter Training

Winter Training

Don't let the cold weather slow you down. Here's some useful tips for training during the winter:
  • SET A GOAL

    • Training for a specific race or number of miles each month can leave you seriously motivated. This will give your training a secondary purpose and push you further along.         You should always be striving towards something.

  • LOOK THE PART

    • A change in season means it’s time for new apparel. And everyone knows that having the right gear changes everything! Once you've transitioned your running wardrobe to the colder season it’s very important to remember one thing: layer, layer, and oh yeah layer!  Properly layering your gear will help you avoid under or overdressing. It's important to stay warm.

Running Around

Running can seem too stressful and going into it with this mindset means automatic failure.  Running is actually supposed to relieve stress and make you more stable, but not knowing when to run or proper techniques can make it challenging to start.  Here are some tips to help you along into a runner lifestyle.

  • Having the right running shoes.
    • Wearing the right running shoes is the key to comfort and injury prevention.  We offer a great selection of running shoes and offer many different sizes to fit your specific foot.  Also, shoes can actually become worn out and need to be replaced every 300 to 400 miles.
  • Warmups and Cool Downs
    • Warming up your body properly tells it that it is getting ready to begin working soon.  Raising your heart rate at a slow pace, the warmup helps minimize stress on your heart when you start running.  Starting your runs with a mid-pace walk and followed with an easy jog for a few minutes is a great example of this.  Cooling down properly allows your heart rate and blood pressure to come down gradually.  Ending your run with a slow jog or walk for a few minutes will do this.
