Running Around Again

Some more helpful tips to start your running lifestyle.

  • Running and Walking

    • It is a good idea to start slow by using the run-walk technique.  Beginning runners usually don't have the stamina to run for long periods of time so by running for a short distance and then following it with a walk break, you can begin to build endurance to run longer and harder.

  • Just Breathe

    • Breathing properly is essential to getting a safe and effective run.  Breathing in through your nose and out through your mouth will give your muscles enough oxygen while running to prevent injuries such as side stiches.

  • Walking and Talking

    • Being to run while talking is a good starting pace.  You should be able to comfortably breathe and carry on a conversation with your running partner.  Being able to do this means you are at the pace you need to be.  Also by starting out this way will aide in preventing over training and injuries.

Winter Training

Winter Training

Don't let the cold weather slow you down. Here's some useful tips for training during the winter:
  • SET A GOAL

    • Training for a specific race or number of miles each month can leave you seriously motivated. This will give your training a secondary purpose and push you further along.         You should always be striving towards something.

  • LOOK THE PART

    • A change in season means it’s time for new apparel. And everyone knows that having the right gear changes everything! Once you've transitioned your running wardrobe to the colder season it’s very important to remember one thing: layer, layer, and oh yeah layer!  Properly layering your gear will help you avoid under or overdressing. It's important to stay warm.

Running Around

Running can seem too stressful and going into it with this mindset means automatic failure.  Running is actually supposed to relieve stress and make you more stable, but not knowing when to run or proper techniques can make it challenging to start.  Here are some tips to help you along into a runner lifestyle.

  • Having the right running shoes.
    • Wearing the right running shoes is the key to comfort and injury prevention.  We offer a great selection of running shoes and offer many different sizes to fit your specific foot.  Also, shoes can actually become worn out and need to be replaced every 300 to 400 miles.
  • Warmups and Cool Downs
    • Warming up your body properly tells it that it is getting ready to begin working soon.  Raising your heart rate at a slow pace, the warmup helps minimize stress on your heart when you start running.  Starting your runs with a mid-pace walk and followed with an easy jog for a few minutes is a great example of this.  Cooling down properly allows your heart rate and blood pressure to come down gradually.  Ending your run with a slow jog or walk for a few minutes will do this.

Think You Know Soccer?

Think you know Soccer?

Well here are some fun facts about the sport that you may not know.

  1. Soccer was originally called association football. "Soccer" is a corruption of "assoc" which is derived in turn from "association" and the English people tending to shorten their words.
  2. The World Cup is the biggest soccer tournament in the world. It is held every four years in a different host country. Billions of people watch the televised games as the national teams from countries around the globe battle it out for soccer supremacy.
  3.  United States has more official soccer players than any other nation in the world - almost 18 million. Of these, 78 percent are under the age of 18. In the 1990s, soccer was recognized as the fastest-growing college and high school sport in the US.

All these players need equipment to perform so if you are looking for a great deal, come by and take a look at our inventory of soccer shoes and gear to take your game to the next level.

The most common cause of heel pain is plantar fasciitis.  Many people with plantar fasciitis may have a heel spur on the front and bottom of their heel. Causes of heel pain may include inadequate flexibility in the calf muscles, lack of arch support, being overweight, sudden increase in exercise or activity, or being on your feet for long periods of time.

Gu Energy Gel

GU Energy Gel provides athletes with a dose of 100 calories to deliver high-quality, easily-digested and long-lasting energy for athletes in every sport and at all levels. Everything inside each packet of GU is engineered to do one simple thing: provide your body with the essential nutrition it needs to keep going for miles and miles and hours and hours. It goes down easy, and it goes to work fast so you don't have to slow down.

What's in it?
  • Carbohydrates - GU provides athletes with a dose of 100 calories in the form of 70-80% maltodextrin and 30-20% fructose (The ratio depends upon the flavor.). Why the mix? It’s a complex carbohydrate, and studies have shown that some complex carbs are actually digested faster than simple sugars like table sugar and honey.
  • Amino Acid Blend - GU features a unique blend of amino acids to combat muscle fatigue, accelerate the conversion of carbohydrates into usable energy, and maintain mental focus.
  • Electrolytes - Sodium and potassium to replenish what is lost during strenuous activity.
  • Caffeine - Some GU flavors are caffeinated while others are not. We add caffeine for two reasons: It acts as a stimulant and it lowers the perceived effort.
How's it different?
An optimal blend of carbohydrates, the proprietary GU amino blend, and a full serving of Vitamin C & E. Oh yeah, did we mention taste? GU Energy Gel has the time-tested consistency and delicious taste that athletes have come to expect from the original energy gel.

How do I use it?
GU should be consumed 15 minutes before and then every 45 minutes thereafter.
